1983 -
PSD was established under the Ministry of Finance on 3 January 1983. It took over all central personnel matters under its then Personnel Administration Branch and the personnel management function from the Public Service Commission.
1987 -
The Social Development Unit was formed within PSD to promote marriages among couples with tertiary education.
1988 -
The Social Integration Management Services (SIMS) was set up to provide assistance to new migrants to Singapore.
1994 -
PSD was transferred from the Ministry of Finance to the Prime Minister's Office. The Secretariat of the Public Service Commission was integrated with the Public Service Division of the Prime Minister's Office.
1995 -
SIMS and the Professionals Information Programmes Management Services Unit (PIPS) were merged to form the Foreign Talent Unit.
Establishment of the PS21 Office in PSD to support the PS21 movement in the public service.
The Scenario Planning Branch was moved from the Ministry of Defence to become the Scenario Planning Office in PSD.
1996 -
The Civil Service College (CSC), comprising the Institute of Policy Development, Civil Service Consulting Group and the Institute of Public Administration & Management was formed to develop public sector leadership and provide training and development for public officers in managerial, supervisory and operating skills.
2001 -
The Civil Service College was restructured as a statutory board under the purview of the Public Service Division, Prime Minister's Office.
2003 -
The Strategic Issues Group was established as a unit within SPO to study long-term cross-agency issues of a strategic nature, and SPO was renamed the Strategic Policy office.
2005 -
PSD Permanent Secretary was appointed to oversee the work of the Public Service Division and Civil Service College.
