The Singapore model for economic success is a much studied and emulated one. For the past 40 years, our open-door policy to foreign investors, coupled with a committed workforce, capable leadership, political stability, reliable infrastructure, and education, have helped us to make swift progress. But given today's rapidly changing global landscape, Singapore cannot remain competitive by keeping to the same formula.

So what will sustain Singapore's success for the next 40 years?
World•Singapore is the Public Service's response to the above question. This growth formula for Singapore rests on four key attributes that differentiate Singapore from other countries:

Trust – why people come to us

"Trust" expresses the Singapore character of trustworthiness, integrity, quality, reliability, productivity, rule of law, respect for intellectual property, and a strong stand against corruption. Singapore delivers on what we promise; we are people of our word. In a world of uncertainty and volatility, trust is an asset that is much valued.

Knowledge – why they work with us

"Knowledge" expresses Singapore's standing in the knowledge economy, our commitment to

high levels of education and skills, complex manufacturing, high value-added services, technological savvy, IT competency, R&D and creativity. This is a knowledge and talent hub where people in different fields create, grow and exchange ideas; where views on the future of Asia and the growth of China and India can be discussed with the clarity that comes from being close to the action but distant enough from it to maintain objectivity.

Connected – why people team with us

Beyond the physical linkages or market connectivity which Singapore is well known for, "Connected" refers to the emotional attachment of family, friends and fans who stand up for Singapore, speak out for Singapore and feel for Singapore, and in this way help investors and talent decide in favour of Singapore.

Life – why they stay with us

"Life" stands for Singapore as a great place to live, learn, work and play in, where streets are safe, the community united, people friendly, the environment clean and green, the quality of life high, education standards superior, the cultural scene becoming more vibrant, and all of Asia with its diversity of cultures and recreational spots easily accessible by air.

World•Singapore provides an overarching framework to organise many disparate initiatives, ideas and concepts, and an impetus to energise work in these areas by getting public officers to identify and seize on opportunities and to think globally. In May 2006, the Public Service formed 19 inter-agency Action Teams, each led by a Permanent Secretary, to translate the emerging ideas into concrete action. Our Ministries and agencies are also aligning their work with World•Singapore, and developing new initiatives that support World•Singapore. Some areas such as engaging citizens, fans and friends are new, while others like being a Global Schoolhouse and a Centre of Medical Excellence are already work-in-progress.
