INTRODUCTION

Our officers are the core of the Public Service. Our institutions, systems and processes, come to life through the actions, practices and beliefs of the men and women who form the Public Service. They are also eye-witnesses of Singapore's history as it has been made in the last 50 years. Indeed, they have been major contributors to Singapore's progress.

Over the past 50 years, generations of officers have worked together with one heart and mind to build the nation. Theirs is an unrelenting pursuit to build a better home for our children and children's children.

In ‘Our People', you will read our officers' stories, of heartache and pain, of joy and celebration, as they helped transform Singapore. This volume comprises five chapters that speak of the qualities that define the Public Service. You will read stories on how our officers live out our core values of Integrity, Service and Excellence; you will get a glimpse of the work and lives of officers serving 24/7 to keep Singapore ticking; and you will find the heart of our officers shining through their service to the nation. Complementing their stories are touching moments captured in pictures, many of which come from their personal albums.

I invite you to enjoy the 50 stories of our officers. Some are first-person accounts while others are shared through interviews or drawn from archival resources and previously published accounts. Each story is part of a larger whole; they represent many colleagues, who may have different individual experiences but share the same purpose and ethos. As you walk in their footsteps, you will feel their passion to serve and get a sense of why they do what they do. Their dedication and commitment to building a better tomorrow define the Public Service. This is why our officers are our precious resource.
